1960s Old Primitive WOOD Carved GOOSE Indian DECOY Fort Rupert JAMES BAY Quebec
Common Eider / Somateria mollissima. Alex Georgelusk, Fort Rupert James Bay, Far North Quebec, Canada. He was an Innu from the local tribe. We rarely see Native american wooden decoys. The previous owner brought it back from there, by plane.
That was in the late 1960s, before roads were built going to James Bay. He got it in the village. In most cases the local hunters were fixing them in the ground with 3 branches you can see the 3 holes underneath. Hand made/carved with axe, chainsaw & knife. Measures about 24" long, 8ΒΌ wide, 13" tall.
Head belongs to the body: the kind of "gap" or shoulder you see is normal, I have seen others by him made the same way. It was partially detached, I fixed it back solidly.
Beak has a piece missing in the center, maybe a bite from a porcupine. Usual drying cracks from the elements. This one was a real working decoy for hunting. GORGEOUS primitive and distinctive look!
