Antique hunting Hank Catton smiling canvasback drake duck decoy Ontario folk art
Wonderful classic Henry Hank Catton short body smiling canvasback. Catton was a Ridgetown, Ontario carver born 1854 and died in 1933. This is his classic style circa 1920, with turtle back and fan tail, and straight line front from neck to breast. The highly carved bill and mandibles and round cheeks give a smiling impression and collectors often call this style his smiling cans. Original small high quality glass eyes.
Bill is slightly lifted upward. Nice old paint that has mellowed nicely. It has an original age check filled with a carved wedge as he was known to do. Slight chip off one side of bill and lightly hit by shot.
Weathered paint to the head. You can see some of the original red showing through. This is a very desirable decoy that doesnt come up very often. Measures about 15 long from bill to tail and 6.75 tall at the head. Body itself is 10.75 long by 6.5 wide.More photos available upon request.
