BOB JONES (1838-1905) RIGMATE BLUEBILL DECOY PAIR PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, ONTARIO
Most of his decoys were made in the mid to late 1800's with his early ones being made in 1860 to 1870. I believe this pair to be from the early period.
There is a similar pair pictured in Jim Stewart's book, "The County Decoys" on page 106. Jim Stewart states, The bluebills are representative of Jones' best decoys-solid, gracefully carved with puffy cheeks on heads set well back on the bodies. Their nicely rounded breasts flare out to wider bodies, giving them an elegant profile The drake bluebill has nicely finished comb paint on the back and brownish paint on the side. The hen is plain brown. The pair is in all original paint and condition.They have been hunted and have gunning wear as well as several shot holes. The eyes are glass with no cracks.
There is caving to the bill where it joins the head and an a carved egg tooth on the underside of the bill tip. They are a rigmate pair as the owners initials on the bottoms are the same on both decoys. The hen is a little larger than the drake and is 12 inches long by 6 inches high. The drake is 11 1/4 by 6 inches. When the bottoms are held together they are the same size.
