Dave Rhodes well fed Black Bellied Plover shorebird decoy Aug. I carved this husky shorebird decoy in 2015 for the major decoy show in Rumson, NJ, in March of this year, sponsored by the New Jersey Decoy Collectors Association and assisted by the New York City Ducks Unlimited Society. I was announced as the Featured Artist and I took along several other specially crafted larger shorebirds and fortunately collected several ribbons. This husky Plover is one of the few carvings that have been unsold, being the overall length of most of the other BB Plovers that I carve, (about 11 inches from tail to bill tip) but is wider in the body than most others. The wings are carved in relief and the wing tip primary feathers are also carved in relief.
The hardwood bill also has some detail carved into it. The plumage is painted with artists acrylic paint that has dried to a matte finish.
The eyes are also painted and then given a gloss varnish finish, as is the bill, to simulate being wet. I have signed and dated (2015) this Plover decoy beneath the tail and included my index right fingerprint as proof of authenticity.
The wooden base and dowel are included. The decoy is not fastened to the base in case the owner has a piece of driftwood or other mount possibility to use.
