Early R. Madison Mitchell Widgeon Hen Duck Decoy
A beautifully carved and painted early Widgeon hen , signed R. Madison Mitchell 1942 on the underside, in original paint and condition. This bird was made as a decorative, and mounted to a base at one time, with the bottom planed flat for that purpose. These pre - 1950's puddle duck hens had beautiful scratch painted heads , a practice that Mitchell did away with on later models. The paint is subtle , but very stylistic and strong with wear to the edges of the bill and tail. There is a fine hairline crack around the neck and about a one inch dent in the back between the wing patches without paint loss, as shown in the photos.
