This is a shorebird decoy (looks like Wilson's Snipe to me) by world renowned sculpture and carver William " Bill" Gibian (1947 -) from Onancock , Virginia. Bill has been carving decoys and shorebirds for about 50 years and is well known for his full size sculptures of ducks and shorebirds. His works of art are in collections and museums throughout the country and he has been featured in numerous magazines and books.
This is one of his early pieces , over 30 years old. The shorebirds wood bill is 3 long , bill is pegged from back of the head and it has glass eyes. Really nice patina and paint with terrific form = head is cocked to the left as if this shorebird is looking down searching for food.
Nicely carved wings and tips = see pictures. Bill's stylized early signature (initials) are carved into the bottom of the decoy. Nice rare early piece to add to any collection of decoys or shorebirds or for anyone that collects Bill's work. See my other auctions for more sporting collectibles.
