Very Rare Early Ken Anger Redhead Duck Decoy. Rare in both species an form, this early drake redhead decoy from the Dunnville Region of Ontario, Canada is attributed to Ken Anger, though it is very similar to the work of Peter Pringle.

While Pringle was the founder of the raspy-finished decoys that come out of the Dunnville region of Ontario Canada, Ken Anger is likely the most well-known of his students. This particular decoy was at one time attributed to Peter Pringle, as it clearly has many traits more similar to Pringle, as Angers style refined over the years and most are more familiar with his later style. Anger's early decoys like this one are sometimes called pancake models as they are wide and flat.

Decoys in this style are very hard to find and very collectible as they are the only form of Anger's work that hasn't been copied to death. And when I say copied to death, I mean that so many makers have reproduced decoys so similar to Anger's late-model decoys that determining different makers and fakes from the real thing can be difficult. Luckily, that can't be said about decoys like the one for sale here, as this decoy is clearly Anger's and Anger's alone showing great influence to his mentor Peter Pringle. While t is not a Pringle in my estimation, the value is not hurt as early Anger's are incredibly difficult to find, and being a redhead makes it that much more rare.

Appears to be in significantly original paint with minimal, if any, notable touch up except to the bottom as shown. The decoy has a great raspy surface finish and nice paint work, see photos. Photos depict the actual decoy, so check them out for the most accurate description of condition.

I have done my best to document this decoy through both the text above and the photographs. I will do my best to accommodate any and all requests. The decoy you are seeing is the exact one you will be getting, therefore, there should be no surprises if you have taken the time to scroll through all the photos and read the text. Unless the decoy is listed in 100% original paint, expect some old hunter touch-up.

Almost every single decoy I have for sale was in fact a working decoy part of a larger rig and subject to typical gunning wear including rubs that were typically touched-up between hunting seasons as a way to pass the time during the off-season. Some of these decoys are more than 100 years old and over the course of many hunting seasons it is bound to happen. I think I covered a fair share of information about Ken Anger and his mentor Peter Pringle above, but despite Anger being the student he is likely the most popular decoy to come out of the Dunnville region of Ontario. Anger worked in a textile concern while he developed his decoy making skills before leaving the mill in the 1940's and making decoy carving his full-time job.

His decoys are some of the best to be made in western Ontario and identifiable by their textured, raspy surface that was designed to eliminate glare in the sun when hunting on the water. This feature gave Anger the nickname the "rasp master", though it was really developed by his mentor Pringle.

More info on Anger can be seen in both Ontario Decoys I and II by Bernie Gates. I say most because as you see some decoys will have a modest/fair-market reserve. Call it down-sizing if you will. If a decoy doesn't meet reserve, let's talk. NOTE: As with most sporting collectibles, along with being a great addition to a game room or home decor, vintage decoys have shown to be a sound investment that seldom decrease in value. Each decoy is truly a One-Of-A-Kind item as no two hand-carved decoys are exactly alike and with so few available decoys from each carver, as time passes, they will surely only increase in value. Be sure to add my to your favorite sellers/searches. I have many more decoys to add from all regions including the Chesapeake Bay, Ontario, Quebec, Michigan, New York, Illinois, the St. The item "Exceedingly Scarce Early Ken Anger Peter Pringle Redhead Duck Decoy Ontario, Ca" is in sale since Sunday, January 21, 2018.
