Hand Carved Early (Deep Cur) Oval Brand m, Elmer Crowell Black Duck Decoy. Hand carved, solid white cedar body with a pine slightly turned head.
The piece has glass eyes, likely all original paint, head is untouched since fashioned by Crowell. Beautiful, deep early oval brand mark, (minor imperfections in bill as shown). No decoy collection is complete w/o a Crowell, or a Lincoln.My neighbor, Jim Parker, Sandwich, Ma. A noted Crowell expert, who solely rebuilt and restored the Crowell Decoy Shop in Harwich told me this decoy is in fine shape and supports original paint premise. I have added (2) photos of the bill. One can see that the damage is negligible, splinter size.
A spot of paint on a really fine artist brush would resolve. I have had the bird for 30+ years and it never bothered me. To the best of my knowledge this bird was never hunted over.
The gentleman I bought this Bird from, as well as a Crowell half bodied, flying Canada Goose (not for sale) in the late 80s told me both were in his family for about (40) years and the bird had never left its place on a sideboard. Also, there is no evidence of water marks, hunting wear.
