Very nice, original and hard to find very early scalloped breast Mallard Drake that pre-dates the formal Mason Decoy Factory. Hand made by William Mason himself in his small shed behind his Tuscola home. Around this time William was making decoys in very limited production for his fellow members of the "Old Club", located on Harsen's Island on the St. Clair River Delta, and other local customers. As typical in early Masons, the head is slightly turned and when viewed straight on, there is a slight uneveness in the shape of the body from one side to another supporting a hand carved approach unlike the later lathe turned standard grade decoys.Head is firm and tight to the body despite the off-center appearance on these early Masons.
