Pair Miles Hancock (1888-1974) Carved Wood DRAKE Duck Decoys

Welcome to Antiques & Moore! Both decoys have nice realistic features, metal tack eyes, their original lead weights and line ties. These decoys are unsigned but the previous owner/collector has identified them and they have a small identification note on the bottom of one that reads Miles Hancock, pg. These nice decoys were part of the Randy & Lee Sewell Collection of Atlanta GA.

Measures 5 1/2" high, 11 1/2" long (beak to tail) and 4 1/4 wide. Combined weight just under 2 pounds.

Condition: Decoys definitely reflect wear and years of use as these decoys were certainly made to be used. The paint is crackled and worn in areas although they do have nice paint remaining. Both tail areas are especially worn on end.

Decoys are structurally solid although they do have some stress cracks around the neck area. Please view all photos as part of description. If you have any specific questions regarding them, please inquire and I will do my best to respond to any concerns. Information regarding Miles Hancock: Mr. Hancock was born in 1888 and lived in Chincoteague Island VA where he was well known among the local duck hunters and as a historic maker of gunning decoys. He was a colorful individual and much has been written about him in most all of the decoy reference books. It has been stated that he did not make the most attractive decoys, however, his classic decoys are included in most decoy collections. He made well constructed, classic decoys that were made to last and was a very prolific carver during this lifetime until his death in 1974.
