Ive been to many duck and decoy shows, and for this period, these display truly fantastic use of the medium, period and technique and for its intended decorative function during the 1940s and 50s. Jacques his teacher, did museum backgrounds, and you can see the combination of museum, wildlife and the use of art for sports advertising my father did in the 40's-70's. As shadow boxes, he did a range for private homes, and believe it or not, for bars in the Northern States for hunting and fishing themes.

For their age they are in perfect condition, and my father has wonderfully executed the paintings on the backgrounds and the ducks. These were painted by my father, Thaddeus Maslanka Sr. (1921- 2008) who studied with Jacques painting backgrounds at the Field museum during his time at The American Academy of Art in the late 1930s, and were part of a line he created for the V. In downtown Chicago in the 1940s and 1950s. They are made of redwood, oil painted Masonite backgrounds, hand carved ducks in a full shadowbox with water and reeds in the bottom.

There is nothing loose or rattling around, they hung in a dark den in his home after the store closed. The salesman also showed me, on the back of a display, tiles my father had did of "risqué" women a la 1940's calendar. I'm sure the images were taken elsewhere, they were cute, such as a woman casting and having her skirt pulled up by the fly and the cast.

To show the times, I was embarrassed as my father was such a quiet man. I guess that the rich who patronized VL&A love that sort of thing.

My father also did hunting tile tables and hunting scenes on individual tiles, that were fired and put on furniture as an early sort of ceramic coaster, or hung on the wall. Condition: They are in used/excellent condition, are made of redwood, painted Masonite backgrounds, hand carved ducks(ducks in absolute perfect condition, being not handled and under glass) in a full shadowbox with water and reeds in the bottom. There may be some minor natural wood darkening and minor shrinkage, as with all antiques from this period. Watch out for the reflections on the old glass, it shows up on some pictures and makes it difficult to gage the true color.
