RARE AMERICAN MERGANSER DRAKE DECOY JULIUS MITTLESTEADT BUFFALO, NEW YORK
He carved decoys for his own use and also for family members and friends. Most of his decoys were used in the Buffalo area, Lake Erie and the Niagara River.
He made decoys of many different species. The decoy is in all original paint. The structural condition is excellent aside from a small loss of wood at the base of the head where it joins the body on the left side. The form is nice, long and sleek as a merganser should be. There is some scratch painting on the back of the decoy.
The decoy has been hunted so there is gunning wear and I can detect no repairs. The eyes are painted tacks which is typical of Mittlesteadt decoys. The bottom of the decoy is stamped three times with the initials "DWS" along with an M or Z brand. The decoy is 19 inches long by 7 1/2 inches high.
