Rare Harry Shourds large black duck decoy Tuckerton, N. J. Ca. 1890 branded LUDLAM
Rare Harry V Shourds large body swimmer black duck decoy Tuckerton, N. A VERY RARE oversize (called a balloon body) swimmer blackduck decoy attributed to Harry V. Shourds from Ocean City, NJ who is known to have made balloon body blackducks circa 1890. Shourds taught his son Harry M. He used his fathers patterns and did his grandsons Alvin Shourds and Harry V. Shourds (AKA Harry the third). And his son Harry M. Carved swimmer geese and blackducks, feeder geese and brant and there are few large body regular and swimmer blackducks by Harry M. Shourds known to exist, hence, the father also should have made large body ones which this looks like, but I personally haven't seen one. Measures 18 &1/2 inches from the tip of the bill to the tail, branded F. LUDLAM on the bottom, a hunter from Sea Isle City, Cape May County, N. Inleaded ballast weight, missing the anchor tie, a few old in use repaints with wear, glass eyes (probably old in use replacements from the original tack eyes) approx. 75% of the end of the bill restored (new) the top nostril area is original, carved nostrils and mandril, age crack in the neck repaired. See the photos of the front and back of this large body ones head listed for sale (in the middle) in comparison to a Harry V. (on the left) and a Harry M.

(on the right) regular size body. Also on page 56 of the book "New Jersey Decoys" by H.

Fleckenstein, there is an example of a Harry M. Shourds balloon body swimmer blackduck. Guaranteed to be as described/pictured. NOTE; most of the shine on the decoys is from the camera lights.
