Vintage and Rare Scaup Decoy by August Heinfield ca 1935
This is a very unusual vintage Scaup Decoy carved by August Heinfield of Rock Hall Maryland circa 1935. Originally carved for use as a hunting decoy by Mr. Heinfield, it luckily has been preserved though it shows minor signs of use with some paint chipping on the underneath and holes where a keel might have been located.
The paint on the head and body appears to be original based on other decoys of his that we found. It has painted eyes and the head would have been a separate carving then fitted on the body. There is a separation on the neck, just below the head that possibly was a repair done before we acquired the decoy and we have not changed it. The paint chipping on the underneath shows the undercoat and would be an indication the decoy was used in water for hunting. It is 13.5 inches long, 5.5 inches wide, 6.5 inches tall, and weighs nearly 2 pounds.Heinfield decoys can be found on the internet and there are some records of sales of his decoys at various auctions. None of the decoys we found had any signature by Mr. Heinfield and this one does not either.
It has a label on the underneath which is visible in one of our photos. We have never found another example of a Scaup and believe this one is quite unusual.
