Vintage Dodge Mason Collaboration Factory Mallard Hen Duck Decoy Lots Of Op
In the seminal book on the subject, "Detroit Decoy Dynasty, " these birds are referred to as a "collaboration" produced during the transition from the Dodge factory to the Mason factory production. The head on this decoy clearly has early Mason characteristics while the body is clearly a Dodge form. The authors note that these "collaborative" decoys would have been a natural outcome of the move from Dodge production to Mason. See "Detroit Decoy Dynasty, " pages 239 and 243 for further information and examples of "collaborative" decoys made during this period. Note the similarity of the heads on the redheads on page 243 to this decoy.
This decoy has a lot of good, somewhat thin original paint with some touch-up the area around some neck filler replacement and on the head. This 120-year old decoy certainly shows wear with some paint flaking on the bill and head, with some wood showing through in a few places on the body. It has a tight age check on the back and some very old white paint on the bottom covering what is likely the original pad weight for ballast.
The eyes appear to be replacements. These early Detroit factory birds are really tough to find in any condition and this one is about as good as one might expect. Measures 15 long; 5-3/4 wide and 7 tall.
