From the Smith Falls Region of Ontario, these decoys exhibit details from both Eastern ontario and Western Quebec. Check out the extremely intricate carving detail on the back, tail, head, and wings of these birds. Each decoy is fitted with a well-made swing weight on the bottom as shown.
At least one of the birds has a carved "A" in the bottom. While all six of these decoys were carved for a decoy rig, they each have their own character including slightly different styles of grooving and detail. Even the tails are carved ever-so-slightly different, but each has a fanned tail with individual feathers delineated.
One even has a turned head! This is a very rare opportunity to get six decoys to display together, as acquiring a small rig of decoys like this is a rare opportunity, especial with decoys of this quality. Original paint with potentially some scattered touch-up, though it all looks original to me. Minimal wear from hunting use as shown. See the photos for the best and most accurate depiction. Structurally, all the decoys are excellent! I have done my best to document this decoy through both the text above and the photographs. I will do my best to accommodate any and all requests.The decoy you are seeing is the exact one you will be getting, therefore, there should be no surprises if you have taken the time to scroll through all the photos and read the text. Unless the decoy is listed in 100% original paint, expect some old hunter touch-up. Almost every single decoy I have for sale was in fact a working decoy part of a larger rig and subject to typical gunning wear including rubs that were typically touched-up between hunting seasons as a way to pass the time during the off-season. Some of these decoys are more than 100 years old and over the course of many hunting seasons it is bound to happen.
Given the lack of information on this carver, and the obviously very detailed and highly-involved carving style, it is very logical that these birds could have been made at the Kingston Penitentiary. While I can't confirm this with 100% authority, someone clearly had a lot of time on there hands, a skilled hand, and has remain as an unknown carver despite being very skilled. The inmate/s that carved decoys at the Kingston Pen remain anonymous due to their "status", thus attributing decoys like this to any specific carver impossible. If not the Kingston Penitentiary, these decoys still remain anonymous carved by a skilled hand whom spent a lot of time detailing these highly decorated working decoys. I say most because as you see some decoys will have a modest/fair-market reserve.
Call it down-sizing if you will. If a decoy doesn't meet reserve, let's talk. NOTE: As with most sporting collectibles, along with being a great addition to a game room or home decor, vintage decoys have shown to be a sound investment that seldom decrease in value. Each decoy is truly a One-Of-A-Kind item as no two hand-carved decoys are exactly alike and with so few available decoys from each carver, as time passes, they will surely only increase in value.
