Anthony Hillman Preening Sandpiper Decoy Shorebird on Clam Shell duck goose crow
This is a preening Semi-Palmated Sandpiper, a mouthful for such a small bird. Life size in this position length is 5 3/4" by 2 1/4" wide. Mounted on a carved Quahog clam, which is a nice solid base.
Bird has painted brass tack eyes, bill and eyes are glossed. Entire bird is waxed to bring up the form and color. Painted in flat acrylics, wood burned and some texturing.
These small sandpipers can be found on beaches and mud flats, in company with Sanderling and other shorebirds. Their light weight allows them to explore the softest mud as they forage for food.
