Putting some of my decoy collection up for sale so please take a look. THIS DECOY PAIR: Master Carver. Whetzel at the end of this listing. Entered into the Wards World Competition in 2010, this bird won an Honorable Mention ribbon in the "antique" class.

It's very neat and easy to recognize the challenge the carver faced to make something new look really old. Body and bill are both made of wood. Branded and etched on the bottom with Mr.

Whetzel mailing label sticker is on the bottom of the base. Use the multiple pictures to assess condition. N Inches (Length by Width by Height) and Weight in Lbs-Oz. Approximately 17 x 3 x 11 inches; Weight: 1 pound 11 ounces. From the Northern Virginia Carvers Magazine of January, 2020.

Ray passed away on Nov 23 at age 86. The Northern Virginia Carvers club was fortunate to have noted local painter and carver, Ray Whetzel, as a member. Ray was a blue ribbon carver of decoys, shorebirds, and fish.

He was also an accomplished painter and antique decoy restorer. Whetzel, a native Washingtonian and a retired U. Government employee, worked as Graphics Chief of the Executive Office Publication Branch at the U. Executive Office Building next to the White House.

He was charged with creating and producing graphics for various presidential reports, from President Nixon through the senior George Bush. Drawing and painting came naturally to Ray, and he honed those skills his entire life. It was a visit to a Salisbury, Maryland duck show, in 1978 that piqued his interest in yet another art form the carving and painting of waterfowl in graceful but realistic form. Ray probed participants on the materials, tools, and techniques they used, and he replayed those discussions in his mind on the way home.

That week Ray bought the necessary tools and materials and carved and painted his first wooden duck: he was hooked! Ray took carving lessons from well-known Maryland carvers Dan Williams and Don Briddell; and within a year he was competing at area shows, which soon expanded to shows up and down the East Coast. He carved for ribbons and, in some cases, cash prizes. Ray studied the likeness and form of waterfowl on the nearby Potomac River, a few blocks from his Oxon Hill home, as well as books and photographs, to create his realistic birds. But it was an old black duck decoy he found along the shore of the Potomac that stirred his interest in old gunning decoys. He was soon restoring old birds, collecting antique decoys, and creating stylized antique birds. Whetzel garnered a vast collection of show ribbons collected over the years. Many of them are blue ribbons, some of them best in show. At a recent Ward Museum World Competition Ray won three ribbons, one of them a first place in the antique Confidence category. Another bird, a flicker, won a Best in Show at an earlier World Competition and spent six months on display at the Ward Museum. Several years ago Whetzel was selected as Carver of the Year by the Rappahannock Ducks Unlimited Chapter, a group he has supported for many years. Ray frequently attended meetings of the Northern Virginia Carvers, and he usually brought along a few works in progress and was generous in discussing his methods and techniques.

He was also interested to see what others are doing and was especially supportive of new carvers. We are fortunate to have had Ray share his experience with us. He will be greatly missed by all our carvers. The item will be carefully and securely packaged. Your satisfaction is my guarantee.
