Buck Crawford Drake Redhead Duck Decoy Excellent Form, Great Wing Relief Carving

Buck Crawford Redhead Drake Decoy. A really great decoy from the Smith Falls School of Ontario, this drake redhead is a rare species and a great addition to any collection.

Carved with extensive detail to the body/wing region and tail, this deocy showcases Crawford's refined abilities on a decoy that additionally has great form. Check out the very fine grooves on the back and wings, these were certainly done with painstaking care and a very steady hand.

The tail of the decoy flows right into the body of the bird, with the grooves form the wings flowing right into the tail. The tail also has fine notches, a typical attribute of decoys form the region, and a trait found on many decoys that were made at the Kingston Penitentiary. The decoy has a large E carved into the bottom, and shows evidence of its original rigging that was removed long ago. Minimal wear from gunning-use, etc.

And some dirt that can be cleaned off. Mostly all original paint with some touch up/strengthening. I have done my best to document this decoy through both the text above and the photographs. I will do my best to accommodate any and all requests. The decoy you are seeing is the exact one you will be getting, therefore, there should be no surprises if you have taken the time to scroll through all the photos and read the text.

Unless the decoy is listed in 100% original paint, expect some old hunter touch-up. Almost every single decoy I have for sale was in fact a working decoy part of a larger rig and subject to typical gunning wear including rubs that were typically touched-up between hunting seasons as a way to pass the time during the off-season. Some of these decoys are more than 100 years old and over the course of many hunting seasons it is bound to happen.

Crawford decoys take on many shapes with influence of both the Nichols from Smith Falls, Ontario and the Paquette Family in Verdun, Quebec. This makes Crawford decoys very diverse and over his 40 plus years of carving his decoys have taken on many different looks for the basic to the extremely ornate. Some of his decoys were hollow, some were solid, and some had very ornate wing and feather detail carving.

In addition, some had that famous Paquette smiling mandible. Crawford made many decoys in the last quarter of the 1800's and first quarter of the 1900's. Crawford was known to have lived in both Ontario and Quebec, hence the different decoy influences. It has even been said that Crawford used parts of Paquette decoys and they used parts made by Crawford when making their decoys. Those connections are clearly shown in his works.

He also had a direct connection to Davey Nichol, adding more depth to his carving legend. Crawford is known to have made many decoys, but they are still very seldom seen and highly collectible due to their excellent form and detail. I say most because as you see some decoys will have a modest/fair-market reserve.

Call it down-sizing if you will. If a decoy doesn't meet reserve, let's talk. NOTE: As with most sporting collectibles, along with being a great addition to a game room or home decor, vintage decoys have shown to be a sound investment that seldom decrease in value. Each decoy is truly a One-Of-A-Kind item as no two hand-carved decoys are exactly alike and with so few available decoys from each carver, as time passes, they will surely only increase in value. Be sure to add my to your favorite sellers/searches.

I have many more decoys to add from all regions including the Chesapeake Bay, Ontario, Quebec, Michigan, New York, Illinois, the St. The item "Buck Crawford Drake Redhead Duck Decoy Excellent Form, Great Wing Relief Carving" is in sale since Sunday, March 12, 2017.
