Thanks for looking and happy collecting! Offered for sale is an antique hand carved canvasback decoy circa 1900. The body is attributed to Sam Barnes of Havre de Grace, Md. I believe the head is original to the body, but it does not look like Sams work. However, according to J Evans McKinney in his book Decoys of the Susquehanna Flats, A number of Sam Barnes canvasback decoys have quite differently carved original heads than those made by Sam. These heads are the work of his brother, John Barnes.This decoy also bears the GRACE brand, for the famous gunning scow. Body measures about 13 long x 6 wide. Old working paint, nice addition to your Upper Bay or branded decoy collection.
