This is a vintage Harry Vinuckson Shourds (1861 - 1920) black duck decoy circa 1900. Harry was the first and likely the most famous of the Shourds family of decoy carvers and was from Tuckerton , New Jersey. This decoy is 16 1/2" long by 6" wide , is hollow carved , tack eyes , inletted bottom weight , incredible form and the vestiges of paint. Just look at the construction and form on this decoy , it looks incredible without the paint because you can see how he made it! If only this decoy could talk about its experiences? A short bio on Harry is listed below from his obit. It has been said that Nucky would go to Webb's Barbershop and come out with a shave, haircut and a perfectly carved duck head. Harry would have hunting parties to his cabin on Barrel Island in Tuckerton Bay, sometime out for a week at a time, hunting Brant, ducks and geese in his sneakbox with canvas windbreaker. When he would return, he would sell the fowl by the pair and the feathers for beds and pillows, and they were also traded for other services.

In the spring, he would go to his summer home in Ocean City where he work as a painter from spring to fall, and the rest of the family would come down when school ended and left before it started back up. To get there, they took a taxi (run by Walter Atkinson) from Tuckerton to Absecon, then the Shore Fast line to Ocean City to the trolley that would take them to 29th Street.
