Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a nice solid wood duck decoy carved by Frank Schmidt of J. Hill of Detroit MI, c. The decoy has nicely painted details and inset glass eyes. The head was most likely carved as a separate piece although it is firmly affixed. There is a long, narrow metal weight attached to a wide wood strip on the base with a metal plate with fixed cord attachment on one end (below the duck's neck) Although the decoy is unsigned, it came from a very knowledgeable collector with a reference tag attached with the following information. Frank Schmidt, Detroit, Michigan, ca. Brother of well known decoy maker Ben Schmidt. Measures 6 3/4" high, 16" long and 6 1/2 wide. This nice decoy is in very good Estate condition although there is an old professional repair on underside of beak.
Their was a break across the bill with a metal screw attached below the beak for support leaving a tight crack line on the top side of the repair. There are numerous minor nicks with cracking to the outer paint throughout the body. This decoy was obviously used and is considered to be in overall very good condition.
