Jode Hillman Mullica Hill, NJ Wigeon Duck Decoy. Carved in the classic and functional NJ style, this fine drake sleeper or preener wigeon duck decoy is a great example of Jode Hillman's work.
In addition to the smooth and sleek form, the paint on this decoy is spectacular. Check out all the crisp transitions between features, the fine feathering to the sides, and the realistic colors of this bird emulating a a bird in it's prime plumage. This bird comes from Jode's personal hunting rig from the 11-12 season, and it is in excellent nearly mint condition.
Jode is an excellent carver and exceptional painter who has created his own style while carving in the same manner as those of the past. All original paint with very minimal wear to the sharp edges, etc.
I have done my best to document this decoy through both the text above and the photographs. I will do my best to accommodate any and all requests. The decoy you are seeing is the exact one you will be getting, therefore, there should be no surprises if you have taken the time to scroll through all the photos and read the text. Unless the decoy is listed in 100% original paint, expect some old hunter touch-up. Almost every single decoy I have for sale was in fact a working decoy part of a larger rig and subject to typical gunning wear including rubs that were typically touched-up between hunting seasons as a way to pass the time during the off-season.
Some of these decoys are more than 100 years old and over the course of many hunting seasons it is bound to happen. Jode Hillman resides in Mullica Hill, Nj, carving his decoys in the legendary Delaware River style of his area.
All of his decoys are made from Cedar, typically hollow, hand-carved, and expertly hand-painted. Hillman is a full-time decoy carver carving with traditional tooling and using methods refined by carver's of the early 20th century. He carved decoys in all birds species to be used as decoys in addition to folk art pieces including fish, turkey calls, and other items for the collector. His decoy are highly collectible and will certainly only keep increasing in value.
