Absolutely Incredible Comb Painting and Perfectly Carved Decoy! One of those interests was duck hunting which led to collecting duck decoys. Pirnie on the campus of Michigan State University in 1960 when I was a student at MSU.

I met him through my Duck Hunting Friend Robert Maier (deceased), who was a student of Dr. Pirnie on several occasions and talked about Duck Hunting and Duck Decoys, as we all shared a love of duck hunting and hand made wooden duck decoys.

Pirnie was the mentor and we were the avid listeners. As a result of that personal contact many years ago, I have always held an affinity and love for Dr. This is a rare vintage decoy by Dr. Pirnie of Michigan State University. It is a Pintail Drake gunning decoy that I do not believe was ever used.

The decoy is in superb cosmetic condition and the original paint is in superb condition. The bottom line is that i doubt if you will ever find a Pirnie Pintail Drake nicer than this one, even if you are lucky enough to find a Pirnie Pintail decoy. A letter of authenticity will be provided with this decoy. This decoy will be double boxed with heavy padding to protect the decoy and the bill during travel to your location. The following is from the obituary of Dr.

Pirnie as written in the Lansing Journal upon his death on September 4, 1976. Miles David Pirnie was born June 4, 1898 four miles from the shores of Lake Ontario in Pulaski, New York. When Miles graduated from High School in June of 1915, he received as a graduation gift Reed's BIRD GUIDE.

Hw used it extensively while in the field. It becoming one of his favorite books that would influence his lifelong career. Degree from Cornell University in 1923, and entered graduate school where he taught ornithology. He raised ten species of ducks for research into their habits. Through this early work, he found that many problems were being experienced throughout the country. D in 1928, The Michigan Department of Conservation asked him to assist them in their program to increase waterfowl populations in Michigan. He reluctantly accepted and worked as Staff Ornithologist.

In 1931 Miles became the Manager of the W. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, which had just been donated to Michigan State University.

He remained there for 17 years, taking numerous waterfowl photographs and conducting research. In 1935 he published a book, "Michigan Waterfowl Management, " one of the first books to address the complex and relatively new science of waterfowl management. In 1948 Miles went to East Lansing as a full professor in Wildlife Management. Pirnie died September 4, 1976 in Lansing, Michigan after a three year battle with cancer.

His lifelong devotion to waterfowl and his contribution to the science may never be equaled. This very nicely formed, alert head-posed, hand carved and painted cedar decoy was made by Dr. Pirnie began carving in the 1930's and went on to carve most of his birds in the 1950's and 1960's.

Originally an ornithologist with the Michigan Department of Conservation, Pirnie ended up establishing himself as a waterfowl expert, as well as a much valued professor at MSU and continued carving almost until his death. Pirnie taught and studied the behavior of all of the different species, which is invaluable when carving decoys that are intended to look like their wild kin. Pirnie taught several accomplished decoy carvers while at Michigan State including fellow Doctorate holder Hank Huber of Saginaw, MI and student Dave Hodgman of Niles, MI. Huber was the dean of the forestry department and would become Dr. Pirnie's carving as well as duck hunting partner. Pirnie, also an avid duck hunter, was a professor of Waterfowl Management and thus the two would start up a long-term relationship that included hunting Huber's home base of the waterfowl-rich Saginaw Bay, as well as carving rigs of duck decoys together. Pirnie began carving in the 1930's and Huber not long after that and they would go on to carve most of their birds in the 1950's and 1960's. Pirnie also did many studies of several species of ducks at his newfound Saginaw Bay "stomping grounds".

As a result of Pirnie studying the behavior of all of the different species of waterfowl, it was inevitable that he and Huber would carve decoys with a natural flair that not only included duck behavior but also their natural movements while on the water. The two constantly tried different carving styles and looks, but also different compositions and construction techniques in order to make the perfect hunting decoy. Huber's decoys in the 1940's were hollow with nicely weighted keels that were cut at an angle towards the center of the decoy, but still not quite riding on the water like he felt they could.

Thus he began experimenting in the early 1950's with solid birds and different types of keels. This drake pintail carved by Mr. Pirnie was carved life-size and is very realistically detailed and painted; it has nice, brown taxidermist grade glass eyes that are carved in perfectly and both the carving and paint jobs are perfectly symmetrical. Pirnie's decoys show his knowledge of the anatomy of a duck and this drake pintail decoy is no exception, even down to the somewhat long, thin neck and body you'll see on an alert and pintail on the water. The head is even pointed upward a little in a semi-alert position as if it just landed and is scooting around checking things out before it relaxes and feeds or rests.

This decoy has beautiful wing and feather painting and awesome combed painting on the sides and back. A gorgeous decoy from one of Michigan's most revered biologists and waterfowl experts. This duck decoy weighs 2-lbs. And measures 14-1/2" long x 5-3/4" wide x 7-3/4 tall. An awesome decoy from a Michigan master carver that had a passion to not only hunt ducks but also to be a force in conservation efforts. These decoys range in value from a minor amount to many hundreds of dollars each and some even value more than a thousand dollars each.
