(Truly a Rare & Great Pair to Own). This 77+ year old Hen Blue-Winged Teal Factory decoy was made by the Animal Trap Company subsidiary in Pascagoula, Mississippi and is the D-4 Model which was hugely popular.The parent company was Animal Trap of Lititz, Pennsylvania. It was made from a hardwood and is made of solid wood and machine-made.
This decoy is made of either pop ash or tupelo, which were affordable and available in Mississippi versus the fairly scarce and expensive cedar used at their Pennsylvania plant. The exterior was hand-painted by spraying and the head is in a neat semi-alert yet relaxed pose and slightly turned to the right. Of the several wood decoy factories in Mississippi, the Animal Trap brand itself would be one of the survivors. This decoy is structurally in perfect "Like New" condition as is the entire decoy. This decoy is as solid as the day it was made with no looseness in the neck whatsoever.
This decoy has the original circle ink-stamp brand on the bottom and it is in unbelievably perfect condition. This decoy and its mate were never rigged and certainly never even floated. The original glass eyes are perfectly intact and perfect. This HEN and the Awesome DRAKE Rig-Mate both.
Measure 11-5/8" long x 4-1/2" wide x 4-3/4 tall -and- Weigh 12-oz. This is Just An Awesome pair of Decoys That Were Machine Carved at the Same Time and have been together ever since in Light and Temperature-controlled collections. They Have the Exact SAME Dimensions and EVEN the WEIGHT!! These decoys were known for their rough exterior and in the case of this decoy even rougher as it was made with a very hard wood which was difficult for the machining to cut smooth.
