This Decoy Clearly came from Climate -Controlled, Natural and Direct Light-Free Collections it was Retired Into! This 112+ year old decoy was made by the Mason Decoy Factory in Detroit, Michigan and is a Challenge Grade, Glass Eye, HEN BROADBILL or GREATER SCAUP Duck Decoy. The Glass Eye standard Grade was the lead in to the Challenge Grade (like this Awesome decoy) -and- this Challenge Model was One Notch Below the Premier Grade or Model, which was their Top-of-the-Line decoy.
The Mason Factory wooden decoys were made with outstanding quality control and unsurpassed craftsmanship in this early industry. The premier was carved hollow and hand-made and hand-painted not long after the turn of the century and hollow decoys were a special order for the challenge grade.
Of the several wood decoy factories in Detroit, Mason would outlive them all and have a 30 year existence. This decoy is structurally in mint original condition structurally and this decoy has been in a Michigan collection and ownership since it was made over a Century ago. The Original Yellow Glass Eyes are perfectly intact and look awesome, although the left eye has a hard to see internal check. This decoy is as solid as the day it was made with no looseness in the neck whatsoever and the decoy is in perfect structural condition other than a a few small dents and typical wear it is just Superb.
This decoy displays wonderfully and was prominently featured in the collector that owned it. The original Glass Eyes are perfectly intact from the day it was gunned over and this decoy is as solid as the day it was made with no looseness in the neck whatsoever and there isn't a chip on this beautiful decoy. There are No shot marks and this decoy has the splendid aura of a century-old decoy.
This decoy displays wonderfully and this decoy has spent its entire retirement in the Temperature-Controlled setting it came from with No Direct Sunlight to Fade this Beautiful Decoy's Paint!! The Very Nice, Yellow, Original Imported Glass Eyes are perfectly Carved in and Located and the paint detail paint looks perfect and it is wonderfully and perfectly intact. This Awesome decoy is also structurally perfect as the Head is Perfectly Attached and this decoy is as solid as the day it was made with no looseness in the neck whatsoever and the deep, bright vivid paint is excellent and has only darkened slightly from age; this decoy truly has outstanding textured and swirling thick brushed paint. Additionally, this decoy has very dry and nice old paint with a beautiful and naturally burnished semi-sheen or slightly shiny matte finish to it from being carefully handled over the years. The outstanding patina on this decoy really is incredible and although it is very hard to capture it in photos, but you can use the zoom feature in this listing to get a good look at the wonderful "texture" and "character" that the surface that this antique and important old gunning decoy has; especially the swirling paint and feather detail. You can actually feel the ridges to the swirling original paint's brush marks. This decoy was in an original collection until recently after the owner's passing and it really is in remarkable condition considering it is over 110 years old. This decoy displays wonderfully and was prominently featured in the original owner's house. This decoy is as solid as the day it was made with no looseness in the neck whatsoever.The paint is incredible and as you can see by the close-up photos the famous Mason Paint Brush Marks were intricately applied as it was done for the challenge grade, glass eye model would have been afforded. This excellent decoy measures 13-1/2" long x 5-1/8" wide x 6 tall and weighs 1-lb.
