Signed Madison Mitchell Bufflehead 1969 Duck Decoy
This is Bufflehead Duck Decoy by Madison Mitchell of Havre de Grace, MD. It is signed on the bottom, R. The decoy is in excellent condition and measures 13.5 in length. It has the typical Mitchell ring and staple on the bottom. It is mainly brown in color with accents of cream and gray painted feathers. Mitchell trained under the watchful eye of Master Carver Sam Barnes until 1926. Mitchell went on to have a spectacular career thatned a period of 60 years.
He was the dean of the Havre de Grace school of decoy making. His work won international praise and inspired dozens of other artists to take up carving. Mitchell's decoys are showcased in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington and much of his work is immortalized in the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum in Maryland.
His work is sought after by both decoy and folk art collectors nationwide.
