Vintage HUTCH PINTAIL DRAKE Wooden Decoy
In his spare time, Codd was an amateur artist; when he retired, he bought out a small decoy carver in Maryland. The sale included generations-old decoy patterns and Codd then combined his painting talent with carving decoys. His distinctive feather detailing is his signature. He exhibited at all major decoy shows and festivals on the East and West coasts and in Europe. His works are collected here and overseas, with one of his decoys in the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art. His decoys were chosen to promote American Tourism in Canada and they decorated Fortune 500 companies' boardrooms. The decoy measures 10 inches long, 3 inches across the breast and 4 1/2 inches tall to the top of its head. There is a small amount of paint wear to the head and the tip of the upturned bill.
Made of solid sugar pine, it weighs 5 1/2 ounces. In excellent condition, with no cracks or chips, it's beautifully, accurately painted with a matte finish and has inset red glass eyes.
The circular brand on the bottom was burned into the wood. In addition, Codd hand signed it "Hutch, " dated it 1982 and labeled the species and gender. This handsome half-size decoy is a wonderful find, pleasing to the collector and decorator alike. This item is in the category "Sporting Goods\Hunting\Vintage Hunting\Duck Decoys".
