Wallace ONeal Canvasback Decoy Currituck, NC
Wallace ONeal Canvasback decoy from the early 1900s. I have had this decoy in my collection for many years and it is an awesome decoy. I have also included a picture of this decoy from the authoritative book on decoys Gunnin Birdsfeaturing the collection of Kroghie Andresen. Wallace ONeal was born in Currituck County in 1867 and passed away in 1955. While in Corolla Wallace actually made most of his decoys for his market hunting activities. He maintained a stand of over five hundred wooden duck decoys. The majority of his decoys were canvasbacks and redheads. The Wallace ONeal decoys typically had a large body (this decoy weighs over 5 pounds) with high angled heads.
The TURNED UP bills on his decoys are his trade mark and signature. This decoy measures 17 inches long from bill to tail. From bottom to top of head is over 10 inches. The decoy is 6 inches wide.
This decoy at one time had the head broken and was repaired and is very strong. It shows years of use as any decoy of this age would have.
The weight on the bottom is original and also a signature of Wallace ONeal decoys. The nail holding the head on the decoy at the bottom back of the head is also a Wallace ONeal signature. This is a very fine collectible and would make a great addition to anyones collection.
