ITEM: HAND CARVED BLACK DUCK DECOY. Was a decoy carver, boat builder and a market hunter in the Tulls Creek community of Currituck County, North Carolina. He served as caretaker of The Launch Landing Club (1918 - 1930s). He became a hunting guide, as a result of which his decoys were in great demand.
He made canvasbacks, blackheads, redheads, and a few puddle ducks. His decoys have a distinctive style with a flat bottom and protruding tail. The surface is left rough from use of a wood rasp.The heads were also left rough to dull the paint so it would not reflect on the water. AGE: circa 1920s - 1930s. LOCATION / ORIGIN: TULLS CREEK, CURRITUCK COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA. SIZE: 16-1/2" long, 6" wide, 8 high.
