Wm. Heverin Bluebill Drake Decoy, Charlestown, MD C. 1900
Listed is an wonderful example of a Heverin decoy that was in my father's collection for more than 40 years. This bluebill is beautifully carved and painted. You do not come across many drake decoys with the angel wing pattern. The paint looks to be original in some places with a light wash of white over the bottom of the decoy. There is also a super thin coat of paint covering the eyes that were originally painted in a goofy alignment...
Like if Marty Feldman was a duck. If you take the bird outside you can see the area that was painted, just over the eyes, and not the entire head... The eyes were repainted in the right place the second time. I've noticed this on quite a few Heverin decoys. One rumor is that the eyes went on last and by that time, he had a snoot full and painted the eyes all over the place.
